4 days in switzerland in July
We're planning on London-paris-Switzerland trip this July. will be our first time in switzerland.Upon recommendation from Rick's book. We decided on the Bernese Oberland. Question is in terms of convenience and cost, w/c is a better place - Lauterbrunnen valley or Murren? Thanks

I personally would stay in Murren, why travel so far to experience a small unspoilt beautiful traditional Swiss resort in the Alps and then end up not staying in it. Nothing beats waking up to the those views...FACT
If it is down to cost then Lauterbrunnen is a good option and it only takes 15 minutes to get to Murren.
I suggest contacting Murren tourism who are very helpful to match your requirements and budget.

Thanks. So I'll look into Murren and Gimmewald. I read a post somewhere that in terms of convenience, murren is more convenient as there are small stores-coop, minos? where we can buy food and snacks as eating out on every meal can be quite expensive. I will definitely check on Murren travel info.
Yes, Murren has a well stocked Coop which has a bakery inside and is located on the lower road and takes 5-10 from the Murrenbahn, nothing is far to walk in Murren !
Eating out is quite expensive but most of the restaurants are located in the hotels and do 'excellent' Pizzas and pasta dishes at reasonable prices(Jungfrau & Edelweiss) and they also have a chinese (Thams) which is amazing and he uses fresh produce, nothing tinned !!
Any more info just fire away !
Murren is a quaint, car-free town with, as you noted, small shops, grocery stores, restaurants and hotels. We stayed at the Hotel Alpina--here's their website: www.muerren.ch/alpina As previously noted, it's a short walk to Gimmelwald. It is beautiful in this area of the alps and, like anywhere else in Switzerland, their prices for eating out and lodging is high. Have fun on your trip!
Denise, stating Mürren is a town makes it sound large..lol..it is a village, Murren has in total 10 shops (including the Coop)
Mürren has a population of just 450 !!
You could stay in Gimmelwald, much smaller than Murren, and go up to the Co-op to buy groceries in Murren, but then just buy eggs, cheese, sausages, etc. from the locals in Gimmelwald. We bought a lot of food from locals, even milk from Esther, just after her husband milked the cows...that was an experience!
The apartment in Chalet Fontana (in Rick's book) is very reasonable and is available by the day (instead of weekly like many apartments). The kitchen is well-equipped and the Coop market is right across the way. You won't get dramatic peak views right out your window like you would from the Alpina, but all you have to do is step outside.
