York B&B Recommendations Please--Revised request
I have searched and learned that the Queen Anne is quite popular with RS fans. In fact, I've reached out to them, and I'm waiting to hear from them regarding availability. Should I not be able to book with them, Can you offer up your favorite places to stay in York? Looking mostly for the $ & $$ price range (as defined in RS books). Also, if you have any input, positive or negative regarding the Queen Anne B&B, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks so much.
Thank you for the Abbeyfields Guest House recommendation. I have just realized that the dates I'm looking to stay in York will be during our wedding anniversary. While it is not a milestone anniversary, it will be my husband's first visit abroad, and this will be our first stop on our vacation. While I'm not looking for anything elaborate, I would like to find a B&B that would be a warm welcome, especially for someone first visit to Britain. First impressions, you know :). Thanks again.

I have stayed at Queen Annes. It's fine but is budget. Try Number 34. It's run by Jason's wife and is a bit nicer but is still a good value. We had a great stay there. Good luck.
My wife and I stayed at Abbeyfields Guest House, which we found through the Rick Steves guide. I highly recommend them. Nice people, comfortable room, and reasonable rates. The proprietors were great about recommendations for food, etc. Most of their clientele are Europeans on tour; when we arrived they said "Americans: you must have found us through Rick Steves!"
Here I go again giving out a website. Failing your first choices,I have always had good luck with www.smoothhound.co.uk. There will be photos and with the help of the map in Ricks book you can generally pinpoint the location. There are so many B&B's in York. I cannot recommend the last place we stayed tho it was okay fine and an easy walk to the Minster. The landlord was a little frosty. See what you can see on Smoothhound and put it out here. Someone may have personal knowledge.
This is not a b&b- but I love the Royal York Hotel. It is attached to the rail station. It has its own lovely flower garden and the rooms are very nice. It would be great for an anniversary stay. If you stay there or not, our favorite restruant is Gert and Henery's. It is in a half-timber house just at the edge of the Shambles and the market. They serve lovely traditional British dishes like fish and chips (hubby's fav), roast beef with yorkshire pudding, roast lamb and the best sauted chicken with roast potates!
If this is your wedding anniversary, husband's first trip abroad, etc. you might want to pop for a room with a view of Yorkminster. Our first visit to York we did this (we economize elsewhere) and we are doing it again this summer for a return visit. Worth every penny to have the memory of that view.
