One day in Stockholm

In my trip to Scandinavia in May, 2007 I will have one whole day (a Sunday) in Stockholm. There I want to go in the Nordiska Museet, Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet) including the Royal Treasury (Skattkammaren), a quick walk through Vasterlanggatan and Stortorget, and if possible Hallwylska Palatset. In early May the Royal treasury is open 12 Noon - 3:00 p.m. (according to the book "Rick Steves' SCANDINAVIA 2006"). At the Hallwylska Palatset the English language guided tour is at 1:00 p.m. I could go with a tour group, not English language, they are every hour 12 Noon - 3:00 p.m. And I want to eat a big lunch at preferably a buffet restaurant. How can I plan to do all that ? I will start at the Stureparken Gastvaning located at Sturegaten 58. I am willing to travel between those places in a Taxi car, if necessary. Thank you.

When I said "I could go with a tour group" I meant a guided tour in Hallwylska Palatset.

You should start by purchasing Rick Steves' Scandinavia 2007 so you have the most up-to-date information.

You can follow Rick's self-guided Gamla Stan walk in the book, which will take you to Stortorget and Vasterlanggatan. If you do that early in the day, then you can finish at the Palace and/or treasury when they open for the day.

Your best bet is the buffet at the Grand Hotel. Then, hit the Hallwylska Palatet after lunch.

All these are walkable, but depending on the weather and your energy level, you may take the subway from your B&B to Gamla Stan at the beginning of your day and then work your way back (via Gamla Stan walk; Royal Palace visit; Grand Hotel, Hallwylska).

After Hallwylska, you can hop on a bus (47 I think) to Dyrgarden where the Nordiska Museum is located.

May is still "off-season", so check hours carefully before going with this plan. Also, reserve the Grand Hotel lunch far in advance. Most of these places have websites, so you can check it all out online.

I wholeheartedly second the suggestion to do Rick's Gamla Stan walk -- our Swedish relatives wanted a copy of it for when other visitors come! For a buffet lunch that's probably a lot cheaper than the Grand, try the department stores. Ahlens has a great buffet lunch, and also a great "Swedish stuff" department (glass, linens, etc.). That way you also get to see the modern side of Stockholm.
