Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey, the PBS miniseries, is really Highclere Castle. It's open for visits in the spring and summer. The countess during WWI actually did turn it into a hospital for soldiers.

If you're a fan of Midsomer Murders on PBS they have a website where you can see all of the locations used for filming the series. Your basic quintessential English villages, save the gore. midsomermurders.org/locationsindex.htm

My family is a huge fan of Downton Abbey. It will be open while we are in London. Trying to decide if we should take a day to go see it. Decisions, decisons!

I'm wondering if it's an easy (or easy-ish) day trip from London using public transportation (train, bus?). I would love to go see Highclere while I'm in London this summer but I don't want to rent a car for just one day. Thoughts? Thanks!!
