I want to go by train from Lucerne, Switzerland to Lake Como. What is the best route?

Don,

The method I'd use is a train departing Lucerne at 08:18, arriving Milano Centrale at 11:50 (time 3H:32M, reservations compulsory). You didn't specify where you wanted to go on Lago di Como, so it's difficult to provide any specific advice from there. Varenna is the big favourite with many here, and that's an easy trip from Milano Centrale, 1H:03M.

Happy travels!

You can also disembark from that train before it gets to Milan, at the town of Como (the station is como San Giovanni), and take a ferry from there to your destination.

I'd agree with Lola on that one. Most trains (I haven't looked at that one in particular) tend to stop at Lugano and Como San Giovanni on the way into Milano. Its always looked like an easy one to me.
