Barcelona Staying in Barri Gotic near Ramblas
Has any stayed in the part of the Bari Gotic south of Carrer dels Escudellers (street)? It is just up from the Columbus Monument and off to the east of the Ramblas a few blocks. It is an apartment in the Ramblas Building. I read somewhere that the Escudellers street is not safe and RS said that the area "somewhat seedy"~ but would like for other opinions about actual safety for walking. Thanks!

I have not stayed in that specific area, but near it. "Seedy" is a broad term...old, authentic, etc. would also be used to describe the area. I felt safe all over Barcelona in the day and in the night as well. Just did not go down the dark alley of course.
Seedy is a good way to describe it, and that's during the middle of a Monday afternoon. (There are cameras on the building corners if that's not a hint). Bad graffiti on anything that doesn't move. Lots of hostels in that area, and regardless of what folks want to believe, cheap accommodations draw some unsavory types. Nicest area of the city is north of Catalunya station in the Eixample neighborhood. If I was a rich man I would stay close to the Passeig de Gracia metro, as that street and Gran Via de Les Corts Catalanes are extremely nice.
Oh, and La Rambla is the most overrated tourist attraction in the world. It's simply a short, wide street with a lot of non-Spanish folks...
Thank you both so much for your replies! I really appreciate this forum for helping us all find enjoyable, safe and authentic ways to travel, learn, and experience other cultures. Thanks again!
