Rented car in one country - return it in another
We want to rent a car in Zagreb, Croatia. But we are flying home from Venice, Italy. Cen this be done or will we incur big fees?

It can be done, but you'll incur a hefty "one way dropoff fee". For your proposed itinerary, for example, Hertz's one-way fee is 400 euros (about $530). And that's just the dropoff fee.
In Europe, the fee for renting in one country and dropping off in another is almost always pretty steep.
