Bad Durkheim Winefest
Went to the annual Bad Durkheim Winefest this weekend, and this is truly an event that I hope never gets ruined by oversaturation like the Oktoberfest. There are many wine fests in Germany, but Bad Durkheim is supposedly the largest. Bad Durkheim is in central Germany near Mannheim and Kaiserslautern. Took the bus although there are multiple ways to get there. The fest itself is what, I suppose, Oktoberfest looked like 30-40 years ago meaning a ton of people buzzed and having a blast. The wine is served in a glass tumbler, and three glasses will have you feeling very good. Anything more than that, and you are risking a hangover that could kill a small child. Arrived at 3, and people were already dancing on the tables at the fest tents, and by the time I left at 10, it was off the hook. The entire evening cost about 40e (3 glasses, dinner, and a snack). I'll need double that for Oktoberfest. You put up a deposit on the glass so keeping it as a souvenir is an option. Finally, I wore a Bayern Munich jersey, and that got alot of attention from getting flipped off to getting a free shot. Bayern is like the New York Yankees, and I probably shouldn't have worn it to a winefest.
