Day trip from Amsterdam to Bruges

My parents will be visiting me in Amsterdam. For one of the days (that I am at work) they would like to visit Bruges. Leaving Amsterdam Centraal in the morning around 0900 and returning around 1900 would be ideal.

Any suggestions for transportation and sites to see?

Take the train.

8:46 IC train arrives 1242, change Antwerpen. or
9:16 Thalys arrives 1225, change Brussel.

To be back at Centraal by 1900 the latest they can leave Brugge is 1535 connecting to the Thalys for arrival at 1844.

So that's the grand sum of 3 hours in Brugge. Too much trouble for too little return by me.

You can get a good flavor of brugges and see the highpoints in a one day trip. Although an overnight is probably preferable

I have to agree with Nigel. With the specific time limits you have expressed, it wouldn't be worth the effort and expense to be there for such a short time. Is there some reason they can't spend a night there to make the trip worthwhile?

Thank you for all of the advice. I will suggest that they travel to Bruges and spend the night and leave the following afternoon. That way they will have plenty of time to enjoy and explore.
