Budapest or Berlin? at new years

I am planning a trip to germany/austria etc and i am debating on going to budapest or berlin (happens to be new years when we would be there) we don't have time for both. Any recommendations on which city would be better to visit at new years/ sites to see in winter?

Those are my two favorite cities! If I had to choose, I'd probably go to Berlin. Go back another time for Budapest.

It depends on what you expect at New Years. I'm not a big fan of Vienna so ..... I've never been to Berlin so i cant even begin to comment. But I have spent New Years in Budapest. I had a great time, but I'm fifty something and Budapest is a great place to be fifty something.

If you are younger there are street parties all over town and the pubs and clubs are active. Despite the beauty of the river, no fire works and not really the same energy as in the States.

I've also done New Years in Rome and to be honest it wasnt really life changing either. So i think maybe the big New Year Eave celebration might be a stronger US tradition than an European tradition. Just my guess. Would i go back for another New Year in Budapest? Yup, probalby this year. Like last time we will do a party at a restaurant; a lot of them sponsor one. Mainly I just enjoy Budapest in the winter.

Berlin is party central for younger people. I'd pick Berlin. There will definitely be fireworks!
