French wine road - Strasbourg to Mulhouse

We're planning on traveling along the road next May. What are people's experiences in how to move between the towns. Is a car necessary or will the train put us near enough to the wineries?

We based in Colmar with easy parking and driving to the wine towns. We did take the train to Strasbourg. My sister just returned from Colmar and took the buses and it worked out okay although she was more into relaxing in Colmar with a few daytrips.

You need a car. The train only runs straight down, and the buses don't operate frequently enough to be of much use. This is what I found when planning similar trip last May. It's absolutely beautiful up there.

I would suggest a car, you do want to get inro some of the little villages along the way

We've done it both with and w/o a car. W/o a car, with Riquewihr as our base, was very relaxing, and there you can walk from village to village and stop at wineries in the villages and in between. But one day we almost missed the last bus back to Riquewihr. Bus service is not the best in that area.
