Reserved train tickets.....just hop on?

Hello,

I've purchased my train tickets for my trip around Italy in Dec. They're second class with assigned seats.

My question is, do we then just show up and hop on our train and head to our seats? My understanding is that since we have assigned seats we don't need to validate them or do anything else, but I want to make sure.

Thank you
Jodi

That's right Jodi. We've just returned from Italy and we reserved our trains in advance from home. Be sure to carry your reservation with you, and a backup in case you lose them. They will come by to view your reservation.

That's right. Just hop on and find your seat. If someone is already sitting there just show them your ticket and they will move. If you decide to go to the snack car be sure to take your ticket with you.

We have encountered cases where they would not move. Just motioned to other empty seats with the suggestion that we taken them. We did. Sometimes a conductor is very hard to find.

It is also a good idea to carry the credit card which you used to purchase the ticket. I know that is required in Germany but cannot remember if we needed it in Italy or not.

You got it. The concept behind validating tickets is whether they could be used for a different train ride if you did NOT validate them. The tickets with reserved seats are good only for that particular train ride on that specific day. So no need to validate.

Thanks so much folks - I will certainly bring the same credit card and take a copy of the ticket. And also pray that we don't miss any of these trains!

As this trip gets closer I'll probably be asking more questions. This site has been so helpful.

Why do you need to show the credit card with which you purchased the tickets?
I never had to. At least not in Italy.
