Italian gifts for new parents

Here's one that I'm pretty sure hasn't been asked here before...

Any ideas on gifts to bring back from Italy for new (first-time) parents and/or for their babies?

I mean, besides Limoncello to celebrate the end of the 9-month drinking hiatus...

There's a store at the north end of Piazza Navona (I think it's called "Del Sogno" or something like that) that specializes in children's toys and other things - you might try looking there. Infant clothing might also be a good idea - check the tags for baby's first "made in Italy" wardrobe piece. A traditional Italian gift is a bottle of wine from the year the baby is born (to be opened when they reach age 16, 18, or 21), although it might be too early to purchase a bottle produced this year that will hold up for that long.

European baby clothes are very high quality an different from most of what you find in the U.S.. Maybe a nice outfit in 6 month size?

I'll look for that store "Del Sogno". Does anyone know of any other stores -- especially to find the high-quality baby clothes of which Sasha speaks?

On a number of occasions, I've brought back European baby clothes as gifts. Go into any department store and just look for something cute in a European brand. Buy a larger size (e.g. one year or 18 months). People get lots of newborn clothes and I've found they appreciate getting things that the kid will wear later after they get through that cache of stuff people give them immediately after the baby is born.

Another possibility is to look in the toy department for something; you will probably see something that will strike you as distinctly Italian.

Thanks Laura! Great advice on getting something for when the baby's a bit older. I would not have thought of that; in fact, I had been thinking in terms of newborn outfits.
