Passport Number for apartment rental

Hi, I was curious if anyone knows or has been asked for their passport number when making a reservation for an apartment rental. I am in the process of renting an apartment in Rome for a week next summer and I am being asked for my passport number and don't know whether this is standard or not??
Any info would be great.
Thank You!

You'll need to give your passport to the hotel/residence eventually for them to get the info and report it to the Police authority.

The Italian law (Article 109 of the Public Security Law of 1931 and various amendments) require hotels and other tourist establishments (including managers of vacation homes) to only accept guests with proper photo ID. For citizens of a non EU country a valid Passport is necessary. The management of the establishment is required to register the guest and copy the ID documents and transmit such guest info to the Police authorities within 24 hours from the guest arrival.

Common in Italy. They need to register visitors with the police. The number has no value so don't worry about it.

Yep, what they said. Standard practice. In fact, if they do NOT ask for your passport number, they are likely to be renting to you and not reporting the income. It's part of the national pastime of tax avoidance in Italy.
