Big Ben graphic

Has anybody currently in London noticed the graphic being projected onto what many refer to as Big Ben?

The tower, renamed this summer from St Stephens Tower to Elizabeth Tower in commemoration of our current Queen, but often known as Big Ben because of the bell within, has been given a huge blue mustache below the clock face - only visible at night because it is a projection.

The mustache is to note Movember. Movember is a national charity event during November where men (and some women) sprout upper lip fuzz or even proper mustaches to raise money for testicular and prostate cancer charities.

So for a few days if you are walking around Westminster and find yourself near Parliament or Westminster Bridge at night, have a look at the tower.

I've nothing useful to add, but instead will query whether it used to be called St Stephen's Tower before being renamed for HM? I thought it was called Clock Tower. St Stephen's Tower is the one in the middle of the Palace with a spire, isn't it?

It was originally referred to as St Stephens Tower, but that name was later officially transferred to the tower above the public entrance. The spire is the 'Central Tower'. According to Parliament's website anyway.

Thank you Michael for the link to the photo;love it! And now I know where "No Shave November" came from. Perhaps I can encourage my college-aged son and his friends to make a contribution to men's cancer research rather than just using this as an excuse to get scruffy faced. (None of them seem to be able to grow a proper mustache at 19 or 20.) He had no idea of the origin, just that it had been around for awhile.

There is a website http://uk.movember.com/ which gives background and plenty photos of neat bros sporting special growths... You can click an international link and change the country.

There's also an iOS app.

Nigel, Thanks for the post. Hubby was diagnosed with agressive prostate cancer this past August. He had robotic davinci surgery to remove his prostate Oct. 9th. All support is appreciated. (He already had a full beard and mustache)

Great photo of Big Ben! Wish we be there in person to see that, but our night in London on our way home is a few days before November 1. Do they by any chance light it early?

Seattle area oncologists who are affiliated with the UW Med School and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center have formed a Movember group to raise awareness and funds. It is called Modawgs in honor of the UW husky mascot.

Www.modawgs.com to see photos of the mustaches ( and make a contribution if you wish).
