Paris: Montmartre walking tour

Has anyone done the self-guided Montmartre walking tour in the RS guidebook? I am planning to do this for a couple hours on a June afternoon before we catch the Eurostar to London from Gare du Nord. I will have my 17 year old son with me. Any tips, recommendations or "can't misses" that I should keep an eye out for?

I have done my own walking tour of Montmartre and found lots of interesting streets, buildings, etc. There also was a vineyard. We basically walked along the side of sScre Couer and followed our noses (away from the artist square). Very interesting, most;y locals- baker delivering bread from the back of his van etc.

I did the RS guidebook tour a few years ago, sort of got off it because I was probably not paying attention, but what I saw was good. When I was on the RS Paris tour though, we had a private guide that took us all through Montmartre and it was fabulous. But I'm sure the guidebook one will work out fine.
I love the Montmartre Museum up there, in a lovely old chateau - you may not have time for it though.

Thanks for the responses. These are good tips. Anyone else out there done this walk? I guess my final question is was it worth it?

Dear Charles

I did this walking tour directly from his book last month, in early September. It was easy to follow and my group of four enjoyed it. I have been to Paris many times prior to this trip but never have seen many of these things. Be sure to read the section on visiting Sacre Coeur as it has interesting things to see inside the church. For example, the pillar with a map engraved on it that depicts the location of Allied bombs that landed near the church. Well worth doing and the amount of time is about 2- 3 hours if you stop for lunch.

Have a great trip.

Charles, I think a walking tour of Montmartre is definitely worth doing whether you do the RS walk, do it on your own from your research, or spend 12 Euro and go with Paris Walks (highly recommend). Fascinating neighborhood, lots of history.
