$724 for 4 day rental car??

Does this sound like a crazy price? Compact automatic, Pick up in Rome, only office open on Sunday, drop off in Siena? What do you guys think?

You do pay more for an automatic, but that sounds pretty high. Is there a drop fee included?

Can you drive a stick shift?

Seems really high to me. We rented a stick shift last summer for 3 days and it was no more than $300.

gina, Try pickup at Rome city office (not downtown office) and drop off at via europa. This has you using Europcar instead of Avis.

Also try expedia.com or orbitz.com. they usually give pretty good rates on all different rental companies.

When comparing prices be sure to check it if includes taxes. The rental rate may not be much but the taxes make the final price skyrocket. You will pay a lot more for an automatic.

We went with autoeurope.com and have reserved a manual Alfa Romeo 147 (compact) for four days in March with a total price of $343. We're picking up in Milan and dropping off in LaSpezia. AutoEurope has gotten good reviews in this forum.

The price was for a mid size automatic. My husband is 6.4 250lbs, like a football player, I dont know if he can fit in one of those compact cars??? He might have to squeeze in , that should be fun! Thanks for all the great advice!

Gina, He'll be fine. I'm the same size. We rented a Ford Focus in MX for 3 weeks last August. No problem.

If you are traveling off season (it is not clear when you are going) and can drive a stick (even if you prefer not to), I have found that it helps to order the cheaper stick in a smaller car. during the summer, all the Americans want big automatics with A/C. Off season, these become free upgrades as the others have been rented by locals. In the UK off-season, we got bigger A/C cars on three rentals, all of which we paid small stick prices for. That was all they had left.
