What would Ed do?
Last week we were on the ICE heading to Paris from Fulda Germany (husband teaching at local university) for a 5 day holiday. Life had been busy in Fulda so packing for the trip was a little hectic. Now, here I am, all settled on the train, sitting by the window with a table....life couldn't be better. So, I reach into my handy RS civita day pack and look for my RS Pocket Paris book to refresh my mind on Paris. (Fortunately this is our 4th time to Paris and staying in the Marais is a new neighborhood for us). We had been very busy after getting to Fulda a few weeks prior, so the book sat on the shelf until ready to go....but no book!!!! How could I make it thru Paris without my RS Pocket Paris...I am the travel planner...my husband comes along for the ride. He saw the shock in my face as all I could find was my French phrase book and my nook. He said we could maybe find Rick in a bookstore in Paris; we could go to the TI; all would be OK. I still didn't feel all that great and sat, sipping my coffee, looking at the beautiful countryside of rural Germany. Then it hit me: What would Ed do? Ed would just move on and enjoy and make the best of it!! My husband (he does have a name: Richard) noticed the difference in my demeanor and wondered what made me change from sad to happy.....I told him about Ed and now he wants to meet Ed when we winter in Perdido Key next March and April. Ed, we owe you a beer!!!!

I once lost my RS guidebook halfway through at 4 week trip. We had not made reservations for the 2nd half...so it was interesting. I lucked out because the Hotel Staubbach in Lauterbrunnen had a couple older copies on its shelf. I offered to buy one and we used it the rest of the trip. It was our first trip too.
Joanne, I hope you sent a PM to Ed in case he doesn't see this post. I'll have to remember that for when I'm traveling and run up against something unexpected: WWED (what would Ed do?). Great, thanks for sharing.

Not sure how to send message to Ed? Go to top right of screen where it says "search". Type in " Ed's comments " and then you can go to the first subject, click it on, you will see a posting by Ed, click on "send private message" and that will work.
Definitely the ultimate in Helpline help. Good for you, Joanne! Hope you and Richard really enjoy your time and travels, and that this is a terrific semester abroad.
Joanne, I certainly get your point about relaxing and 'winging it', but doesn't your Nook have wi-fi? Don't forget you can always simply download any forgotten books :-D

We both have our nooks here but unable to download books we have purchased in the USA let alone purchase a book. wnt to wifi places and it just will not connect. We notified Barnes and Nobel last year when this happened and they said we were unable to get their satillite here in Germany. If you know of a way to get around this, let me know for future trips. Last year Richard shut off his nook completely in the flight over and could not open any of his books. That was his old (original) nook. But when he got back to USA is was able to download everything that was in there. Technology....I still use a small phone, no texting, no internet on the go. Really think I must change all this prior to coming back here next year. Do have a cellomobile phone here and is good for a quick call (.69 minute) and use skype and skype telephone (.02/minute) also. Anyway, thank you for the suggestion. Must run...on our way to Baden Baden to enjoy the therme.
Book readers don't rely on satellites.
A friend's son recently couldn't do his homework because he couldn't "open" his math book on his school-issed ipad. We never could have used that excuse!
This is beyond WWED, and onto e-readers, but, has anyone had this issue with a Kindle? I've used a Kindle for the past two years overseas and have never had a problem downloading a book onto it. Anyone else?
I don't know the specs on the Nook. But the later versions of Kindle has G3 and it says one can download anywhere in the world.
If it is an older model, Amazon said you can first download onto a computer then download onto the old Kindle.
I use a kindle here in Germany without problems.
