Sorrento/Almafi Coast or Greece with teenagers?

(Posted on Itay helpline also)

My family is planning a trip to Italy June/July 2013. We have 24 days - our plan is 4 nights in Venice, a week in Tuscany, 4 nights in Rome - then the plan was to spend a week in Sorrento. However my kids (teenagers -14/16) have now brought up the idea of going to Greece instead.

My questions:
Would it be worth skipping Sorrento/Almafi Coast to fly to Athens for a few day and then one of the islands (Naxos?).

Which area would teenagers (14/16) like better?
I know we will lose a day to travel if we go to Greece, but I think the idea of the Athens and Greek food might be calling to my son.

Thank for your input - I can't finalize our trip until I make a decision on this one.

7 days isn't a lot of time for Greece, and you'll actually lose more than a day in travel time when you factor in the time lost getting you to Naxos and back to Athens for the plane home.

Lisa ...
I just did a quick search for flights on Expedia for July 4, and you can leave Rome at 11 am, arrive in Santorini 7:55 pm, for $287 per person.

You could spend a couple of days on Santorini, then ferry to Naxos for a few days, then ferry to Athens for a few days and fly home from Athens. (It's usually a good idea to leave your Athens time for the end of the trip, in case of bad weather or ferry problems.)

A week in Sorrento would also be fun. You could see Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast, and perhaps Paestum (for Greek ruins, but I don't think they have Greek food).

This will be a tough decision!
