recommended hotel in salzburg and vienna

Hi
After 18 days in Italy we are travelling by train to Salzburg,
Staying only Saturday evening before again by train to Vienna,
Sunday afternoon. May 4 & 5
I used the "search" but most recent similar request was in 2010
Any comments on Venice to Salzburg by train are very welcome.
Via Verona is the current option. Thanks in advance.

Gerard, Since you are arriving and leaving by train I have a hotel suggestion in Salzburg. The Der Salzburger Hof. info@dersalzburgerhof.at www.dersalzburgerhof.at

It is just a block from the train station. Go out the station, walk through the cab and bus park, slightly down hill and you should see the sign up on the second story of the building. It is family owned, has a European/East Indian restuarant, and cost us 78.50Euros a night.

Gerard,

I stayed at THIS Hotel in Salzburg and would certainly recommend it. It's in the main part of town and easy walking distance to the sights, and there are some nice restaurants nearby.

Cheers!

Salzburg hotel: Weisse Tauge

Vienna: Pension Sacher. They book months in advance. Incredible place to stay so cheap right in the center.

Gerard, I second the Weisse Taube. It is in the old section which can be walked or bused from the train station. In Vienna I recommend the Best Western Kaiserhof. Very nice hotel with elegant breakfast - champagne included.

Sitting in the Weisse Taube as I write this. Nice hotel. Great location. For a bit less money, we also liked the Hotel Bergland in the new town, about 10 minutes walk from here.

Gerard, I forgot to mention that outside the train station, along the right hand sidewalk, there is an inside shopping mall that has a supermarket where you can reprovision for the next leg of your trip.
