We learned how and when to book tickets across Europe using www.seat61.com.

The German railway DB Bahn website at http://www.bahn.com can be your best friend when planning European train trips.

After you have worked out the trains you want if you go to the Austrian (OBB) website http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp you may be able to find a low fare if purchased well ahead.

The Bahn website can only sell tickets for trains in Germany or into to from Germany.

Figure on 12 and a half or 13 or so hours. Be careful of short connections that may surprise you.

The 6:52 from Wien Hbf (ICE) with just one 21 minute connection in Frankfurt to a TGV with and arrival at Lyon Part Dieu at 19:56 looks like the connection I would choose if it were me.

If you're not planning to stop off on the way, but want to go from Vienna to Lyon direct, look into flights on www.skyscanner.com. For a trip taking that long by train, I'd fly instead.

Hi,

Did you plan on doing this Vienna to Lyon by night?

In view of the connections I would choose going by day, less cumbersome, the 0652 dep transfering only in Frankfurt is the most ideal. In this case better to transfer in Frankfurt than Munich. Just be prepared to spend all day riding. The 1st leg Wien Westbahnhof to Frankfurt Hbf. on the ICE is good, have done that a few times. The second leg on the TGV has a mandatory reservation.
