Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye via Mallaig:

What is the best way to get to Mallaig from Edinburghtrain or bus? We will arrive in Edinburgh from the US in late morning in July and would like to get to Mallaig by that same evening. Is this possible? And what would be the best way to get there? Approximately, how long would it take to arrive in Mallaig?

It's a 6.5 hour journey by train and it's a beautiful train ride. Check it out on Scotrail.

You have to make it to Mallaig by 5:30 PM or so. The last ferry of the day leaves at 6:00 PM.

Here's the summer 2013 schedule for the ferry: http://tinyurl.com/7qcp42g

On youtube , look for " Confessions of a Trainspotter " written and presented by Michael Palin of Monty Python notoriety . He makes this trip by rail fulfilling a childhood dream to travel the length of Britain by rail. A very romantic adventure !!
