Berlin-Dresden-Bamberg-Koblenz - possible itinerary/hotels?
I'm thinking of spending two nights in Berlin and doing the Brewer's Berlin Walking Tour. Does anyone have suggestions for hotels near Friedrichsstrasse station (which appears to be the meeting/start point for the tour)? And then, on my way to Kobenz, I could spend an afternoon and night in Dresden to see the cathedral (hotel suggestion near train station?) and one afternoon and night in Bamberg (also hotel suggestion in/near city center?)
Any thoughts or suggestions of things to see in Dresden and Bamberg would be appreciated. Thx!

There is a business hotel right outside and to the left of the train station called the City Hotel. Business class hotel relatively new. I booked it on Booking.Com for 90 euro a night. Dresden has many top hotels, I would get one in the old town area. The Frauenkirche area is loaded with history and is the heart of the tourist area. I hate pushing a hotel web site but booking.com has many of the top rated hotels in that area at some really good prices. Dresden has become one of our favorite cities in Germany and I try to get to it when ever we are close.
Thanks! I've noticed City Hotel near station in Hannover, too. Might serve my purpose there, too.
How far is it from the train station in Dresden to the Frauenkirche area?
Any suggestions for Berlin?

Relative to Berlin prices, the hotels on Friedrichstrasse or near Bahnhof Friedrichstrasse are most likely to be pricey. Since your tour meets there, (it's a good size station with a very good Food Court), I would suggest staying a few stations west on the S-Bahn at Berlin Hauptbahnhof, 2 mins from the Hbf at Meininger Hotel, very practical as regards to price and location.
From Dresden Hbf to the Frauenkirche count on a 25-30 mins walk, very nice area.
All you need to do is catch a tram to the downtown area. 5 minute ride or keep walking right down the huge shopping area right out the station doors. As stated about 20 minutes. If you keep walking you will walk right into the Franuendirche district. If you use the City Hotel they gave me an all day ticket. The tickets are very very cheap. You catch the tram right out side the train station.
Since you are interested in beer, you might enjoy staying at the Fässla Brewery in Bamberg:

It is well-located within walking distance of the train station and just across the river from the oldtown. Gets great reviews on Tripadvisor, and prices are good. You have to call them for a reservation.

Do you plan on visiting or staying in Hannover? Unless it's for a specific reason or seeing a particular historical site, such as the Herrenhäuser Gardens, I wouldn't recommend that. I would suggest a place a bit west... Minden an der Weser.

Fred - I sort of need to contact/see somebody in Hannover, but in the past I have stayed in Celle and have just taken the train in. This time, I may stay near the station. I LOVE the Hannover Hbf; the food, the shops, the people watching!
And, many years ago, I took the train to Minden and rented a bike there, and biked along the canal. I'll check into staying there overnight. Also want to check into biking to Bergen-Belsen, probably from Celle.
I think I'm going to end up with too many places, this trip. Might need to prioritize the list. :)
Bamberg is supposed to offer great cycing too, including the Main River bike path:

Got it. Yes, Hannover Hbf has a good Food Court, one of the better ones in Germany. Staying in Celle is much more preferable (it escaped the area bombing that plastered Hannover) than in Hannover itself.
I was only at the Celle Bahnhof to transfer. See the Bormann Museum there...good historical "stuff." You're right...the camp is north of Celle. In 1945 the British Army's Tac HQ was between Celle and Lüneburg.

Michael, I've been checking the Intercity Hotel in Dresden, but the 70E rate is nonrefundable. Any thoughts on an Ibis (there seem to be several) or the Holiday Inn Express? They're all between the train station and the Frauenkirche. Looks easily walkable on the map, and I could always leave bag in station locker and only take backpack with overnight stuff to the hotel.
Fred, yes, the Meininger Hotel in Berlin looks good; there are a couple others that, on the map, look like they're between the station and the Friedrichstrasse higher priced hotels (eg. Hotel Arte Luise looks interresting).
Lola, haven't checked hotels in Bamberg yet, but will look at Faessla. The biking info looks interesting, too. You said you'll be there in September. Me, too. :)

You will walk right past the Ibis Hotels on your way to the market square. I have never been in them but they were part of the Russian building complex in Dresden. They seem to be OK. I think they are about 10 stories with balconies. View must be good. I most always do non-refundables. I know I take a chance but it does pay off. We stay at many 4 and 5 stars that way. Hope I don't get burned one day.
I've finally nailed down my dates of travel and have booked two nights at the Meininger Hotel in Berlin. How far is it to the Friedrichstrasse station if I wanted to walk it?
In Dresden is it possible to go to the top of the cathedral?

That would be good walk going from Berlin Hbf. to Bahnhof Friedrichstraße, a major junction station for the S/U Bahn On the S-Bahn Friedrichstraße is the next station after Hbf.
From Meininger Hotel I would suggest going on Invalidenstrasse until you run into Friedrichstrasse. You can get more precise instructions at the Meininger.
Back to your original Berlin question, I stayed at the Maritim hotel that sits very close to the Friedrichsstraße station. It wasn't cheap, but very centrally located and it had the best breakfast spread I've encountered in Europe.
