London to Haarlem

What is the best way to get from London to Haarlem? We will be spending a few days in London before starting our Rick Steves tour in Haarlem this year.

Hi Marguerite,

The best option would be by train (about the same time as flying but without the hassles) plus if you book far enough in advance it should be cheaper.

You can do the whole trip in just over 5 hours.
Eurostar London to Brussells just over 2 hours.
Change trains in Brussells.
Thalys or Fyra, Brussells to Amsterdam Central just under 2 hours
Amsterdam Central to Haarlem - normal train about every 10-15 minutes, trip takes about 15-20 minutes.
This web site has all the info you need re times, costs and how to buy your tickets.

Have a great trip.

As well as the Eurostar route above or flying, there is one other option that may interest - "rail and sail" where you buy a package covering an evening train ticket from central London to Harwich, connecting to the overnight ferry to Hook of Holland and then a Dutch train to Amsterdam/Haarlem next morning. Obviously its the longest option, but has the advantage of allowing a full day in London, sleeping whilst you travel, and being in Amsterdam mid-morning. It is pretty cheap too when you consider the hotel room cost you save. Stena offer this.

Its not for everyone, but thought I'd mention it.

If the "rail and sail" option described by Keith interests you, here's a link to the Man in Seat 61's page with all the details.
