winter hiking in tuscany

my family would like to do some hiking and exploring without a tour group. Any suggestions for best places in late January? We would like to do this in and around Florence, Pisa. I understand the best hiking is Cinque Terre but most of the coastal hikes are still closed? We hiked there four years ago and so loved it! Deb

There are some excellent books on hiking in Tuscany. I think you would do well to buy one or two and find a self-guided hike with good directions. One we liked is "Walking and Eating in Tuscany and Umbria." Stick to lower elevations in January.
