Getting from Chamonix-Mont-Blanc to Milan on Italian Side

Hello, my question is, is it possible to get from the Italian side of Mont-Blanc to Milan, and if so, what is the easiest way to do it. My family and I will be traveling in October of this year and wanted to see what would be the easiest way to get from Mont-Blanc to Milan. Is it easier to go back to the French side or go from the Italian side. Thank you.

The easiest way is to have a car, so that you can just cross the international tunnel under the Mont Blanc massif. It takes just 30 min without traffic to cross between Courmayeur and Chamonix. It is unlikely that you'd have traffic near the tunnel in October. The Mont Blanc road tunnel is 9 miles long and is opened 24/7/365.

There is a very good highway route to Milano (tolls all the way, but the pavement is perfect), it begins right at the entrance of the tunnel on the Italian side.

That is the easiest way. Downside: the tunnel toll is expensive (€ 32 one-way, € 51 return within 7 days). But it does take you with ease between both sides.

Raymond , the other alternative is by rail : Chamonix - Martigny - Brig - Domodossola - Milan . This is about 5 hours , several changes ( easy ) of train enroute . The leg from Chamonix to Martigny is very scenic .

There is bus service from Chamonix through the tunnel and on to Milan. See the timetables here.

The rail route between Chamonix and the French border is undergoing scheduled reconstruction and there is just replacement bus there, where you then catch the train to Martigny, then to Brig, then to Milan.

Avoid buses from Chamonix to Milano as well. They are like Greyhound buses, cramped. If anything, get out in Aosta and continue by train only!

Which would you prefer?

1. 2 1/2 hours on a direct bus from Aosta to Milan.

2. A long wait in Aosta and then 4 hours on trains from Aosta to Milan with 2 connections.
