Driving from Freiburg to Fussen/ Reutte area

I am thinking of driving from Freiburg (south- Black Forest area) to Fussen/ Reutte area following parts of Rick Steve's best of Germany. The section drives through the Black Forest and then drive to Bavaria - Fussen/ Reutte.
Has anyone driven this? What route options are available? What is the distance, time to drive this?

Or is this better to take by train?

Don't know about the drive you are doing, but we drove from Rotheneburg to Fussen to see the castles, then spent the night in Reutte. Reutte was a very cute quiet town that we enjoyed for a night. Very non touristy (we were there early Sept).
