Ring of Kerry Self Guided Tour

In Rick's guidebook a very detailed route is described. However, except for a couple of spots, he doesn't mention how much time to allot for visiting the various points of interest in order to get Waterville by 11:00 and beat the tour buses. Has anyone followed this path and could they give me a rough idea how much time we have.

I've never followed Rick's tour. Does he include Ft. Stague (not sure if that's the correct spelling? It's a round fort that dates back to Roman times reached from the Ring but the busses don't stop there because the road is too small for them.

When is your trip? We were there in April and encountered very few problems with tour buses crowding the road. I don't recall exact times, but we drove from Dingle to Killarney, the north side of the ring and back, then on to Kenmare very comfortably in one day. Most of the scenery is on the south side and the western end - if your time is limited, skip the north side.....Two other days, we drove the south side from Kenmare, once just to Sneem which is a nice little town with some shops, the other day we drove to Portmagee where you can visit the "Skellig Experience" museum which was very interesting. We had plenty of time to poke around on various little side roads and still were back in Kenmare by 5:00. Hope this helps a bit.

Hi, I would agree with Cynthia about skipping the north side of Kerry. We stayed in Kenmare and traveled the the south side to Waterville by way of Sneen. The north side is not as pretty and dramatic.

As an aside, we found the Dingle Peninsula to be more interesting and accessible. We hired a driver and car out of Dingle for 60 euros for 3-4 hour private trip and it was marvelous
