Train travel in France

We traveled extensively by train in Italy last year and found it a very good experience. The only pre-booking I did was for fast train trips between Rome and Florence and Venice. Any tips re: train travel in France? Should all TGV trips be pre-booked? We travel one day from Toulon to Avignon but we need to take a bus to get to Toulon and I was concerned about missing a connection.

As far as I am concerned, it is the same. Lots of trains, frequent schedule. We don't prebook more than a day or two in advance, if that, but realize that we do pass up some discounts. For us that is the price of convenience for not running to catch a train. It is our style of travel and we are comfortable with it. Others like to have a rigid plan and the discounts that comes with prebooking everything. Personal choice.
