Rome and environs in late june/early july

I'm planning to visit my college-age niece in Rome at the end of June/beginning of July. Any thoughts on where to go outside of Rome? Also, I need suggestions for clean but inexpensive B and B or apt. in Rome at that time.

Rome is a big city spread over a large area. Assume you would want to stay near the niece. Ask her. Prepare for hot and humid weather. Steves' guidebook for Rome outlines a number of day trips from Rome. Also see RoninRome.com for a couple of suggestions.

I know the owners of this one http://www.littleitalybb.com/. Great price for a clean safe place.

We stayed at B&B Al Centro di Roma last July and it was clean, affordable with good airconditioning and in a great location.

In September we took a day trip out to Hadrian's Villa, which was very enjoyable. However, I don't know if I could handle it in the intense heat of July.

Florence is a great day trip via train.

THANKS! I've been to Rome, but know it's expensive, so the B & B referrals area greatly appreciated.
