Rail from London to Edinburgh and return

I'm spending a few days in London before and after my RS trip to Scotland. Do I need to make train reservations beforehand or can I wait until I arrive? What web site can I use to find the train schedule? Any tips?

If you wait until you arrive, you'll have no trouble buying tickets for daytime trains, but they'll be very expensive. The walk-up 2nd class fare can be as much as £147.50. The cheapest advance purchase discount fare can be as low as £17.00.

Book ASAP (usually up to 12 weeks in advance) on the East Coast site. Discount fare tickets are for a specific departure date and time and are non-exchangeable and non-refundable. Be sure you can commit before booking.

If you want to travel overnight one way, again book well in advance to get a Bargain Berth as low as £19.00 on the Caledonian Sleeper. The same conditions apply.
