York place to stay Opt town central or quaint
Hello, in looking for place to stay in York its seems the options are either to stay close in at hotel uninteresting place or a bit out at a B&B. We have three days only there and traveling with mom who can not do tons of walking (but fine with public transport.) Any thoughts to which is better way to go? One thing is if we are close in town central and my mom needs to rest I can head out for a bit and come back to meet her. . . but other factors too in that we like more people friendly places. Names of particular places welcome too though can look in the Rick book

We stayed at a lovely B&B called Barbican House just outside the walls of the city. It was an easy walk to all the sites for us, but perhaps not for your mother. Another thing to keep in mind with the B&Bs is they probably won't have elevators which might also be a problem for someone with less mobility.
Hello Cj. At York I liked the B & B 23 St. Mary's, located at 23 St. Mary's. It is a short distance north of the York train station. It is near Bootham street, (west of Yorkshire Museum). It is in a stately town house, it has nine rooms that are extravagantly furnished. Each room has a different decor style and colors. Breakfast was included in the price, when I was there. Try to have conversation with the owner Chris Simpson in the lounge room in the evening. On the internet at www.23stmarys.co.uk
I've stayed at Abbeyfields on Bootham terrace - it's not directly in town but pretty close. It's near the St. Mary's abbey ruins/grounds. The owners Les and Al are such nice people, and they might even have some ideas on whether it's a good idea for your mom to stay there if you email them inquiring about a room.

I'm going to second Adrienne's recommendation of Abbeyfields Guest House because the B&B and its owners are wonderful. If you contact them, ask them about their thoughts on your mom's walking situation. There is a very short, direct route (about 5 min.) into the city that requires following a path and crossing a small parking lot -ask them if the footing is OK for someone with walking issues. But there is also a slightly longer route (maybe 10-15 min?) on pavements (sidewalks) along a main road that were flat and well paved when I was there. Perhaps she could walk that route or get a cab to take her into the city centre.
