Heathrow to Plymouth

We have a 2 week trip planned for early May 2013 to Cornwall. First time senior travelers to England. What is best way to get to Plymouth from Heathrow? Train to Paddington then to Plymouth or bus to Reading and then train to Plymouth? After Plymouth we rent a car and visit Launceston (grandparents born there)and Truro with each city/town as a home base for exploring. Any suggestions?

I don't have an opinion on which is better: the RailAir bus to Reading and the train from there or the train all the way from Paddington.

FYI, National Express has direct coach (highway bus) service from Heathrow to Plymouth. Departures are at 08:50, 11:50, and 13:20.
