rental car company in Italy

Need to rent a car for a few days in Tuscany. Which rental car do you suggest?

I prefer renting from major rental companies rather than independent locals.
All major rental companies have a presence in Florence: Avis-Budget, Hertz, Thrifty, Alamo-National, Europcar, Maggiore, Sixt, etc.

It's substantially cheaper to rent from a city office, rather than the airport. Even more so if you pick up from out of center locations.

I think Roberto has a typo. Although there is a company called www.autoeuropa.com, they consistently get TERRIBLE reviews here and SlowTrav and Tripadvisor. He probably meant http://www.autoeurope.com/, a completely separate company that consistently gets great reviews. That's who we're using for our upcoming trip in May to rent a car in Verona.

Type "autoeuropa" into the Search window on this page (upper right) to see the negative comments I'm talking about.

As Roberto mentions, one tip to save a lot of money is to avoid picking up or dropping off a car at an airport or at a train station. We'll be saving over $150 in Verona by walking about 2000 feet from the train station to pick up our car.
