Vienna Opera

I have put in my request for a tickets with the official box office with the state opera, does anyone know when they start to allocate tickets and has anyone gotten theirs at the last minute. I had success with this system in Munich but the Vienna Opera is a whole different deal in terms of popularity. The day of the performance is May 26

The big question would be if the performance involves a particularly famous singer, conductor or theater director. If none of the above, you should't have too much trouble... although I admit, I've never attended the Vienna Opera, but I seen other big-name opera companies in other cities.

If you are a big Opera fan then you should go to the Hungarian State Opera as well and the come back here and describe the differences in the two events.

Christopher, here is the ticket website http://www.jegymester.hu/ for the Hungarian State Opera and a number of other venues in Budapest. The Hungarian State Opera's site is http://www.opera.hu/en I think you will find the opera in Budapest to be a much different experience than Vienna. ... in a good way. If you enjoy theater you might also enjoy the Operett Theater, they have a number of performances with English subtitles. http://www.operettszinhaz.hu/

Hah, years ago I saw Madam Butterfly in the nose bleed section. It was absolutely dirt cheap and you stood in the rafters through the whole opera. Those "places" were sold day of the performance and you purchased your ticket and then hightailed it up to the rafters so that you could be in front and lean on the railing. Your plan sounds much more civilized. ; ) Pam

The Vienna Opera broadcasts a number of performances on a large screen on the right hand side platz. Seating and cushions are first come first serve but standing room is essentially unlimited.

The website is:

http://www.wiener-staatsoper.at/Content.Node/home/aktuelles/oper_live/liste.de.php

It currently list the April shows right now. Good luck on the May date.

Budapest state opera performances are dirt cheap by North American standards and the opera house is its own spectacle. Buy on-line; that part of the operation is modern. But one small caution: The surtitles are in Hungarian (surprise!) so a Wagner marathon might be better appreciated if you already know the plot.
