Bike/Train?
I had another idea, and was wondering if anyone had tried riding trains out from London, and then biking to places that might be too far to walk..... I don't know where I'd rent a bike, but thought it might be an idea for a car alternative, but I've never tried it.

It's a good idea but you need to be slightly wary of train companies' restrictions on carrying bikes.
Unfortunately, given the fragmented nature of the network, these can vary from route to route. There's a good summary here

Even if you don't take a bike on a train you can hire one and cycle along the South Bank of the Thames
