SIm card or pocket wifi and VOIP?

Going to Europe (5 countries) in May. I was originally looking to get a SIM card for my iPhone for making local calls to hotels, etc and using wifi for surfing when at the hotels.

Then, I heard about these pocket wifi devices you can rent with unlimited data. Any experience using one of these (like from TEP wireless?). I was thinking it would be nice to surf the net on the train rides and I could use Skype or the Majic Jack app for the local calls. Price is around $255 for 21 days rental with unlimited data.

Jeffrey,

I'm not familiar with TEP Wireless or services of that type, so can't offer any first-hand comments. It seems a bit pricey, and not available to those of us in Canada (AFAIK).

I find that I much prefer spending the time on train rides enjoying the scenery that I've paid a lot to see, or visiting with other travellers or the "locals". I can "surf the net" at home or at the hotel, so I probably wouldn't use something like this. If I need to make a brief call or check a train connection, a Smartphone is an easier (and probably cheaper) solution.

Cheers!

Ken, good points. I forgot I'm going to be in EUROPE and not a ride to NYC.

Thanks!
