I need to get from Athens to Heraklion, Crete,and from there to Chania and then back to Athens. Are ferries an available option from Athens to Heraklion and from Chjania to Athens? What's the best was to get from Heraklion to Chania: rental car or bus? Alejandro

I wouldn't consider ferries for that distance. Crete is far. You should fly. The time saved will make up for the higher prices.
Olympic, Agean, fly to both cities from Athens. Sky Express flies to HER.
You can take a KTEL bus. 2.5 hours, approx. 15 euros.
PS: to get more responses edit your title question. Transportation is to generic. Say Transport Athens-Crete.
