Is London a beautiful city?

How does it rate compared to Paris and Prague? I know it's one a must-see place, but I'm just wondering how scenic of a city is it? And what are the most beautiful cities to visit in England?

To add my two pence worth as it where, I can only speak as to the beauty of London and Paris as I have not yet been to Prague. As has already been mentioned the Blitz did no favours to London in terms of scenery. I am on my 3rd year and 3rd consecutive trip to London; like any major world city, including Paris, New York San Francisco, there are parts that are areas that very beautiful and areas that are less attractive. For London, much like Paris, a great deal of the beauty is found in the historic buildings and monuments that are to be found in and around the city. I love the parks in London St. James is beautiful as is Hyde Park. I also love the architecture of the buildings including St. Paul's, Westminster Abbey, St. Margaret's Church [it is next door to WA] and the Parliament buildings.

It has already been said and it is true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder; if you say that beauty can only be found in areas of undisturbed wilderness then perhaps, outside of the parks, London would not hold much favour for you. If you love English literature, history and architecture as I do then London is quite beautiful and well worth visiting.

Cheers

Elaine

Haven't been to Prague yet -- but the beauty of London just didn't move me like the beauty of Paris. That being said, I found much of London to be very beautiful and with such great history! I also loved the juxtaposition of the ancient and the modern. I certainly don't think you would be disappointed visiting there. I'm anxious to return.

I found London to be a beautiful city not in a panoramic sense, but rather in the nooks and crannies of the city at eye level: greeneries and parks, row homes in beautiful neighborhoods, historical buildings around Westminster, walk along the river, the maze of the Tube (which I rather enjoyed taking at rush hour), strolling through the West End and Soho, market at Notting Hill, pubs with character, etc. It is a very beautiful city in its own charming and exciting way. Maybe not scenic, but many worthwhile things to see.

Bath certainly has one of England's most beautiful old city centers, especially at twilight, and the Cotswolds villages...so charming, so historic, so unique in their architecture. As for London, I would definitely describe it as a "beautiful city," for me, perhaps the most interesting, lively, and enriching big city in the world--but it's not so much about the vistas (although looking at the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben from atop the London Eye is a remarkable sight!). To me, it's the energy, the diversity, the scale, the depth, the distinct neighborhoods, the people and their daily endeavors, that make London town so beautiful and engaging. Here's a link to a blog on our recent trip to England (with some pics), including Bath, Stonehenge, The Cotswolds, and London: http://moltogentileitalia.blogspot.com/2009/07/getting-whacked-in-england-9-nights.html
