What's your price range? Also, have you checked through the RS book on Italy or Florence/Tuscany? Great suggestions for starters. Once you narrow down a few, you can ask for more detail on the website.

Just spent 3 nights at the Hotel Accademia and I highly recommend it. Great location next the Medicci Chapel and near SMN train station.

Try the Relais Tiffany. It is in the center, near the station, and was very reasonably priced for such a place.

I stayed at the Hotel California - it is between the Academia and the Duomo.
Walking distance to everything in Florence.
It was very nice, clean, great breakfasts, sitting on the rooftop deck in the late afternoons enjoying a glass of wine.
You can find them on Trip Advisor.

My favorite is Hotel Casci on via Cavour.

Does it have to be a hotel? We stayed here for 5 nights (early June 2012) and loved it: Alloro B&B.

Are you going to have a car? That's important because of the access to the ZTL.

If not, check "La Scaletta" in via de Guicciardini. They have a roof bar and restaurant with a billion dollar view. Even if you don't stay there, go for a drink or some appetizers at night.

Hi Lisa -
We just spent three nights at the Hotel Axial. Is right down the street from the Duomo, an easy walk from the train station. We felt safe there. Is on the second (third?) floor up on a busy street, so ask for a courtyard room if street noice is an issue for you. Breakfast was nice, and there were plenty of shops and restaurants very close - and wonderful gelatto! Enjoy your trip!

Earlier this summer I spent two nights at the "Domus Florentiae" right on the Piazza Santa Maria Novella. The owner was most gracious, most of the staff speak English, breakfast on the terrace was wonderful and I enjoyed the life of the Piazza. Can get a little noisy at night but then so can I. Room was a little small but clean.

The Hotel Pendini can be somewhat pricey, but right in the Piazza del Republica and very close to the Duomo, etc.... we loved it 2 years ago
