Southern Italy

We are spending 4 nights on the Amalfi coast, near Sorrento, after which we would like to see Paestum and then head to Matera. Any thoughts on the area? Best hotets, etc.. Thank you in advance.

Gail,

If you're travelling via public transport, getting to Matera is possible albeit a big challenging. I've researched that route in the past, but will have to see if I can find my notes.

For your stay in Matera, you might consider Hotel Sassi. It's a very "usual" hotel, but very comfortable.

Cheers!

I did this last year from the east coast. Ken is right, transportation is a challenge. Matera has no train station, so it would probably be best to go to Salerno to take a bus to Matera. Pad stun has a few good hotels, my favorite is Poseidonia al Mare, about one kometer from the ruins but very close to the beach. The hotel owners will pick you up at the train station and loan you Ike's. Great breakfasts. There is a wonderful B&B in Matera, Donna Eleonora, just a staircase away from the sassi. PM me for details.

We will have a car so getting there won't be too difficult (I hope!) Parking at some hotels or B&Bs could be. I will look up the ones mentioned. Thanks!

In Matera we stayed at the Locanda di San Martino Hotel. It is a "cave hotel" right in the sassi area and was wonderful. The breakfast was great and the rooms were simple yet elegant. We did a 3-4 hour tour with local tour guide Nadia Garlatti and she was very good. As we walked around the city she gave us an interesting perspective on the people who once dwelled in caves in Matera.
