Gite(apartment) Rental Terms

We found a nice Gite in Provence on Gite.com and the owner wants full payment 6 weeks in advance. It seems like a legitmate rental but I feel uneasy about this. Is this customary?

In what form do they want the payment? I would worry less about someone taking a credit card (because you have protections against fraudulent charges) than someone wanting a cashier's check or wire transfer six weeks ahead.

I've never rented in Provence. Maybe someone else will chime in who has.

They want a credit card (with a 3% surcharge), Paypal, or bank transfer. We would have to use a credit card with Paypal. Do you think a direct credit card would be better because of the protection? I didn't realize we had that protection.

Thank you for the comments. I called my bank and Visa will cover the charges in case of a fraud.
