Magic Moments in Britain & Scotland

Tour members on Hadrian's Wall
Doing the humpty-dumpty on Hadrian's Wall.

Day-by-day itineraries can give you a general idea of what you'll get for your money, but they can't prepare you for how Britain and Scotland will surprise you at every turn...and perform a little magic. Here are a few "wow" moments from our Best of Britain and Best of Scotland tour alums...

Scotland: "The moment we left Fort Arthur on Loch Ness and headed over the Highlands to the Isle of Skye, the trip became magical. We had no idea the Highlands were so wild, rugged and beautiful. For three days after that, all we said was, 'Wow!' (And we live in the Rockies!) Seeing the Harry Potter bridge, the Isle of Skye, the drive to Oban and the Valley of Glencoe, were all 'Wow!'"
— Kathi in Golden, CO

Scotland: "The biggest 'wow' for me personally was during our free day in Oban, when I journeyed out to the Isle of Iona. I enjoyed just 'being' and time for quite reflection, with the only interruption being from a curious wren.
— Ellen in Cannon Beach, OR

Britain: "Visiting the Castlerigg Stone Circle near Keswick at sunset. Standing in a 2,500 year old stone circle was amazing! Second was York, especially the ruined abbey and YorkMinster area. I loved it when Adrian drove around the Coach round the 'Magic Roundabout' at Swindon twice just to show us how it is done — while Martin dryly commented that 'Americans are known to spend all day here.'"
— Gary in Calgary, Alberta

Britain: "While I had some favorite moments, I must say my favorite memories involve the people on the tour. From just this one experience, combined with what I've read of other people's experiences, the people who take Rick Steves' tours are exceptionally easy to get along with and they add tremendously to the enjoyment of the trip."
— Ann in Lake Forest Park, WA

Britain: "Attending an evening service at York Minster and listening to the Boy's Choir. They sang Psalm 150 as their recessional. The boys' voices echoed back to us as they were leaving the magnificent Gothic sanctuary. Also, we loved the lakes of the Lake District with their 50's style wooden rowboats. No speed boats; how novel!"
— Jim in East Lansing, MI

Britain: "As I loved just about every moment of the trip, this is a difficult question. The Lake District was beautiful beyond my expectation. Another memorable moment was during our medieval banquet at Ruthin Castle in Wales. When our hostess was singing of 'coming home to Wales', I found I had tears in my eyes. The country has a beauty that made my heart ache, and in some strange fashion, I, too, felt I had come home."
— Karen in Kissimmee, FL
