Irish locals
Don't let their age fool ye...

Every month we feature funny, offbeat or inspiring anecdotes. If you have a true tale to tell, send it to stories@ricksteves.com. If you have a photo that illustrates it, please attach it. Don't forget to tell us which city and state you live in. We'd love to hear from you!

Sociable Security

My best friend and I traveled on Rick's Ireland tour in 2006. On our first afternoon in Dublin we spent some time at the National Gallery. It was an extremely rainy day. As we came in from the street, an older guard, probably in his 70's, helped us with our coats and umbrellas. He was very nice and we had a laugh about the weather.

My friend and I strolled through the gallery and we started to look for a Vermeer painting that we wanted to see, but we could not find it. We turned a corner and saw the guard we had met earlier. We asked him where that painting was, and he told us.

But, having the gift of gab, he also had to tell us a story about another Vermeer that had been stolen several years prior. When he finished, I asked him if the theft took place in the gallery we were in. He replied (in the best Irish brogue I've ever heard), "No, Jay-sus! You're protected by natural born killers here!"

It's just one of many wonderful memories from that trip. I can't thank Rick and Declan enough for a wonderful first taste of Ireland. Hopefully it's just the first of many!
