Spain and Portugal Raves from Tour Members

Windmills in La Mancha
"My personal 'wows' were surprisingly more delicate this time [such as] the morning light behind the windmills of La Mancha..."

Take it from our tour members: every Rick Steves tour through Spain and Portugal — from Barcelona to the Basque Country to Andalucía and the Heart of Portugal — comes filled with unforgettable experiences...

"On our second evening in Madrid there was a wine tasting. Afterward we had the evening to ourselves. Our guide made a number of suggestions of things that we might do, one of which was a favorite neighborhood restaurant/bar of his. Several of us decided to give it a try. In a word, it was great. The place was packed with locals — literally shoulder to shoulder. There were no chairs, just a few stools. We spent most of the rest of the evening there just eating some terrific Spanish bar food and drinking a local wine."

"During our visit to the Quinta Santa Eufemia Winery, I was one of the group that volunteered to stomp grapes. We were provided shorts and t-shirts and had our feet sanitized before hopping into the grapes. There were about 10 of us. An accordion player soon added to the festivities and a chorus line was formed to 'dance' to the stomping of the grapes. A great time was had by all! I live in wine country in Oregon, but have never stomped grapes. This was a first and a big 'wow' for me!"

"I loved walking on the Camino de Santiago. The day was warm and windy as we walked at our own pace, talking or not, past asparagus fields, apricot orchards and patches of poppies. We stopped in small towns where people greeted us, and we celebrated our 48th anniversary at the winery with 24 new friends! Another highlight was Bilbao and the Guggenheim Museum. The architecture was astonishing and I couldn't stop taking pictures."

"I have always appreciated the major 'wows' experienced with a Rick Steves tour....and this trip (my sixth) had all those bells and whistles. With that said, my personal 'wows' were surprisingly more delicate this time: being in the town square in Segovia when Spain won a game in the World Cup; the morning light behind the windmills of La Mancha; my first sighting of the coast of Africa; listening to a Swiss jazz station on a vintage radio in my antique-filled room in Tangier; groves of olive trees as far as the eye could see; Arcos; our early Saturday walk in Sevilla...and the sunset in Tarifa, accompanied by the ceremonial dipping of toes in the Atlantic and Mediterranean with good friends."
