Tour Experiences: Deirdre & Alasdair

To learn what an experience is like, listen to someone who's done it.
Deirdre and Alasdair wanted to introduce their daughters, Elizabeth and Rachel, to their Scottish heritage. They chose Rick Steves' Best of Scotland tour because it covers all the big sights as well as places where Alasdair's parents had lived before immigrating to Canada. The family also planned to visit some relatives after their tour ended — but they didn't need to wait that long.
Deirdre recounts some pleasant surprises during her family's tour through the Best of Scotland...
"Although we had plans to visit with some relatives after the tour ended, little did we expect to meet relatives on the tour! Unexpectedly, our bus driver turned out to be a cousin of my husband's mother. Another surprise encounter happened when we used some of our free time to visit my husband's grandfather's grave. We never would have found the gravesite if it hadn't been for a friendly local who remembered Alasdair's grandfather from the 1960s! Every single day there were several of Rick's famous 'ah ha!' moments — beautiful scenery, historical sights, encounters with interesting locals, traditional Scottish food and music. For our family, however, our tour was extra-special because of the family connections that were made and the appreciation that our children now have of their Scottish heritage. For them Scotland is not just a beautiful country seen and enjoyed on a very well-run tour — it's now personal."
