Letters to Danish B&B

Americans Boycott Danish B&B After Rude Awakening

Here is a small sample of some of the many letters Morten received due to the "pray for our troops and country" posting on our website.

My wife and I very much agree with your opinion of our current administration in the United States, as reported by the travel writer, Rick Steves.  We could not believe that the American people were stupid enough to elect Bush again after the lies he told [or, at least, approved] to drag us into war in Iraq and the extreme attack he has made on our basic rights.  He has championed the religious right and their campaign to impose their concepts of religion and patriotism on everyone in the country.  We just want you to know that not all Americans [probably not even the majority of Americans] share these views.  We also are appalled that this administration has destroyed our relations with other nations of the world.  Their only foreign policy is to force their ideas upon all the people of the world, at the point of a gun, if necessary.  Be assured that most Americans do not support this approach, even though that seems to be the case because of the wave of chauvinism that the administration has succeeded in creating.

Sincerely,

Dale

Mr. Frederiksen:

I read your comments on Rick's Steves' website regarding America, Americans, and politics. I can only hope that most Europeans are not as uniformed as you are.

It amazes me that you can look at the world and see America as the bad guy and not the Islamic extremists whom we are fighting against. The "attack" on Iraq? It baffles me that you were not bothered by the torture and mass slaughter of innocent Iraqis by Saddam Hussein, by his misuse of money that was supposed to feed the Iraqi people, by his use of chemical weapons against the Kurdish people — that you would apparently rather have him still in power.

And Guantanamo?? These prisoners are bad people. The conditions are far from inhumane. In addition to basic necessities such as warm showers, food better than most prisons anywhere in the world, clean sheets, etc., prisoners receive prayer blankets, soccer balls and a Koran.

You and other European elite socialists can coddle dictators and fight against the spread of Democracy until you need American to save you as we did in the past two world wars started by — wait for it — European dictators.  The attitude of Europeans like you today is exactly the same as it was before, during, and after Hitler came to power. You failed to see evil then as you fail to see it now. People, such as Winston Churchhill, who did see the threat of Hitler and Nazis was disbelieved and ridiculed by many Europeans. And look where that got you — occupied by Nazis during WWII and siding with Saddam Hussein and Islamic extremists now. You're on the wrong side.

Reading up on the viewpoint of the Islamic extremists would do you a world of good. Muslim terrorists don't care what side of the political spectrum you are on. To them, you are an infidel and deserve to die.

I vote in every election and I voted for George Bush. I believe that spreading Democracy is a good thing. I believe that American is the best country on Earth and I DO pray for our troops.

I'm sending your comments to every person I know. I highly doubt that your inbox is full of supportive emails. Even if that is true, it won't be for long.

P.S. You're welcome.  If it wasn't for "evil" America, you'd be speaking German now.  Go watch the History Channel.

I read about your email on Rick Steves website.  I feel our troops and our country do need help!  It must come from the people of our country who have been brainwashed and need to wake up!  I agree with you about Pres. Bush — I did vote — but not for him! He is ruining our country and our reputation in the world.  I feel sorry for the young people in our armed forces who think they are defending freedom. Many of these people enter the service, not because they believe in Bush, but for economic reasons or lack of education. The majority of these people are members of minorities, Hispanic, black and other disadvantaged members of our society.

I am glad that you responded to that couple with your truth. Many people here are infected with a false patriotism that is spoon-fed to them by the right-wing media. I am sorry that your country has to be involved in this scheme. Please know that some of us are trying to hold Bush and company responsible for this awful mistake.

Best regards,

Becky

Thank you for recognizing that not all Americans support Bush's political war. I personally do not mind offering prayers for troops, but also offer them for the victims of this unnecessary war. Many of the troops are poor Americans unable to find work in this current economy that the Bush administration has wrecked through war and policies that benefit the wealthy. The poor are always the ones who fight and die in war. Rarely do the wealthy put their children at risk. I also offer prayers for the war to finally end. Maybe one day the United States again will become a world leader in peace, human rights and in the sincere development of poor nations.

I hope to one day visit your beautiful city.

Peace,

Jeff
