| Never underestimate the power of the blue and yellow book (and a recommendation from Rick!) |
Every month we feature funny, cautionary, or inspiring anecdotes from travelers. If you have a true (short) travel tale to share, send it to stories@ricksteves.com. If you have a photo that illustrates it, please attach it. And don't forget to tell us your first name and the city where you live. We'd love to hear from you!
Never underestimate the power of the blue and yellow book
My husband and I had just finished a scrumptious evening meal at the Del Fino in Marina Grande in Sorrento and were walking slowly along the water front. We were lost in the gentle lap of the waves, the boats bouncing on the water, the women sitting in groups with their sewing, the men playing cards and the children kicking the soccer balls. It was a scene out of a wonderful movie! As with everywhere we went in Italy, I carried my trusty blue and yellow "Rick Steves Italy 2009" book with me.
All of a sudden our "lost in bella Italia" reverie was shattered! A woman came running from one of the Marina Grande restaurants. She was angrily yelling, "Ricka Steves, Ricka Steves" and she was holding her hands near her eyes to resemble horse blinders. She then pointed to our guide book and continued yelling, "You Americans think you eat at only restaurants that Ricka Steves says so. You come, please, to my restaurant."
We were stunned and somewhat speechless. We mumbled something about leaving tomorrow and walked quickly toward the steps leading up and away from Marina Grande. Never underestimate the power of the blue and yellow book! After three trips to Italy with the blue and yellow, we're total believers in its credibility. Our nights are spent in Rick recommended B&Bs and we eat at only the Rick recommended restaurants. We've never been disappointed! Keep up the great work!!
