Welsh Men's Choirs

By Rick Steves

Wafting through pubs and churches across Wales, one of the most enduring features of that seductive culture is the sound of its choirs. You'll hear them either practicing, performing, or simply taking musical victory laps for the sheer love of song.

Every town has a choir (men's or mixed) that practices weekly. Visitors are usually welcome to observe and very often follow the choir down to the pub afterwards for a good, old-fashioned, beer-lubricated singsong. Choirs practice weekly in the towns of Ruthin (mixed choir at Tabernacle Church, Thu 20:00–21:30 except Aug), Llangollen (men's choir Fri at 19:30 at Hand Hotel, 21:00 pub singsong afterward, tel. 01978/860-303), Denbigh (men's choir Tue 19:30 and Thu 20:00), Llandudno (£4 concerts Tue 20:00 in summer, near Conwy), and Caernarfon (Tue 19:45–21:30 except Aug, at the Galeri convention center at Victoria Dock). Confirm choir schedules with your B&B hosts or a local TI.
