Travel with Rick Steves Fundraiser Modules: Details and Rundowns

Released April 4, 2013

Overview

Our latest Travel with Rick Steves fundraiser modules will make it easy for you to fundraise during Travel with Rick Steves. Rick does a lot of the work for you. He pitches the value of public radio at the end of each module. He also restates the value of contributing at the start of all but the opening segment.

These fundraising modules can be used at any time. They can be combined with the modules released in September 2012 to create a two-hour fundraiser special, or to be run over consecutive weekends.

There are also links to additional modules from prior Travel with Rick Steves fundraisers, which you can use if you wish to use additional material.

The suggested rundowns give you options for airing the latest Travel with Rick Steves fundraiser modules, with or without the newscast break at 01:00 into the hour, and making it time out to 59-minutes.

We recommend you include the Billboard at the open of the show, to set the same tone as during non-fundraising weeks. It promotes content for each of the four modules, so that listeners are eager to hear the material coming up, and less likely to tune out "because it's a fundraiser."

The modules contain interviews with popular guests from recent months on the show, with a variety of tones and topics.

As we have done in past years, each module ends with a generic public radio fundraising pitch from Rick. Rick opens the segment B, C, and D modules with a brief re-statement of the need to support public radio, and he thanks listeners for "doing your part" during the just-concluded pitch break.

There is also a short closing pitch from Rick, which you can use during your concluding local pitch break on Travel with Rick Steves. In it, he re-states the value of contributing to public radio.

We've also provided another generic pitch from Rick that you can use during other fundraising programming on your station.

Rick Steves Fundraiser Premium Packages

The Travel with Rick Steves premium pitches have been updated with the April 2013 funder package. The package now includes a larger DVD boxed set, which is offered at the same wholesale price to stations and at the same pledge level. You simply add these recorded pitches from Rick to your local pitch breaks to get Rick to sell them for you. These premiums are not mentioned in the modules, for stations that wish to fundraise using other premiums.

Note that the Rick Steves-themed fundraiser premiums have proven to be significant money-raisers for public radio and television. We strongly encourage each Travel with Rick Steves affiliate to offer the Rick Steves premium package. There is no minimum required order on your part - just order what you need when you need to fulfill your pledges. Station wholesale costs are kept low to help you raise funds for your station.

You can send your station's development department to this link, to know how this year's Travel with Rick Steves premium package will work to raise money for your station.

Rick is offering thank you gifts at three support levels: $60, $90, or $180. He has voiced two versions of his premium pitch. We recommend you alternate between the longer Premium Pitch A and the somewhat shorter Premium Pitch B in your local pitch breaks.

Some Travel with Rick Steves affiliates have also offered the Rick Steves premium package as a special Rick Steves-themed incentive during their local talk shows, and even during Morning Edition, with remarkably strong results. Let us know how it works for you.

Airing the Travel with Rick Steves Fundraiser Material

The following rundowns give you options for how to program the Travel with Rick Steves fundraiser modules, released in April 2013. On the following pages, we suggest start times for each segment, and lengths for your local pitch breaks, in order to time out correctly to one full hour.

We recommend opening with the Billboard, even if you're going to go directly to the first module, so that it sounds like the weekly program. It will allow Rick to create an enthusiastic air of anticipation for what listeners will hear in the hour ahead.
